Filters

Filters are designed to take or send back ranges of frequencies. Most filters are designed to accept or reject only specific frequencies. Filters can contain inductors and capacitors, collectively called discrete components, or even made up of sections of feedline, referred to as stubs. The following are the categories you would ordinarily come across:

- Feedline Filters: You can use a feedline filter to eliminate or reduce undesirable signals from getting in the way of your ham radio. These unwanted signals usually emanate from the antenna, and some other times the ham radio can also affect the antenna signal. When the signals have already been transmitted, you can use the feedline filter to make sure that the transmitter does not radiate any unwanted signal, which can cause interference to other devices. Receiver performance can also be tampered with when the receiver comes in contact with these unwanted signals; you can also use a feedline filter to eliminate any unwanted signal that can compromise the receiver.

- Receiving Filters: Receiving filters are normally installed in your ham radio, and are most times built from a quartz crystal or more often from a small tuning-fork-like structure. Receiving filters can be used to eliminate all unwanted signals except a single desirable signal in the receiver. The receiving filter improves the receiver’s selectivity making the receiver to be able to receive the single desirable while other signals are still available.

- Audio Filters: You can deploy the audio filters, which are usually on the receiver output to offer extra filtering ability, helping to reject any nearby signals or unwanted disturbances or noise.

- Notch Filter: The notch will work to reduce or completely eliminate a very narrow range of frequencies, such as a single interfering tone.
